My little brother is a graduate student at Harvard, so I was reading their school newspaper and came across an interesting study on the political leanings of college professors, at both the 4 year and community college levels. Despite most expectations, moderates outnumber liberals. They interviewed 1417 full-time faculty and found the breakdown was as follows:
Extremely Liberal - 9.4%
Liberal - 34.7%
Slightly Liberal - 18.1%
Middle of the Road - 18%
Slightly Conservative - 10.5%
Conservative - 8%
Very Conservative - 1.2%
I assume any reputable study would try to get a good cross section of faculty, as looking at a heavy sample of Humanities or Business/Law faculty would skew the results.
hey I just posted that!
ReplyDeletegreat minds think alike.
ReplyDeleteInteresting guys... The survey designer in me wonders just how much of the "moderates outnumber liberals" finding comes from the choices that were given to them. That is to say, if the survey asked one to classify themselves as either liberal, conservative, or moderate, without any other choices, I doubt the finding would be the same.
ReplyDeletetake the same poll at Liberal Arts Colleges and you will be comforted :-)
