I started using a automatic phone dialing service called asteriskdialer.com. There is a little bit of a learning curve, but once you figure things out, the service is easy to use. With the service, you can send a message to all of your students. I collected phone numbers at the beginning of the term to do this. The cost is 3.5 cents per minute, so if you leave a short message (dialing time and answering machine messages count in the time), you can get by with 3.5 cents per call. There is a little investment, but I hope that I will cut down on the number of students who show up to exams with no idea that a test will be given. Plus, the thing is a little cool.
