Tough Time on Sabbatical

After returning from my week-long visit to Peru, I would like to warn everyone about taking sabbaticals. Yes, I got to travel to the premier archaeological site of Machu Picchu, however, there are downsides as well.

First off, travel is disruptive to one's nap schedule.  This is especially true in placing like Peru, where the altitude makes sleeping a little difficult.  Also, going with people who drink a lot means that there is a good chance that one will have a hangover.  Finally, being in South America makes accessing this blog rather difficult.

Beyond problems associated with travel, there are other issues that should give you pause before applying for a year off.  Remember that you must do a sabbatical project, something that is quite demanding on your time.  My trip to Peru took up a whole week!  Also, there is simply too much flexibility when it comes to figuring out which movie to see, a cause for confusion.

So, think hard prior to deciding to take a sabbatical.  I urge you all to withhold your applications.  This is especially the case for 2014-2015 (when I will be eligible again).
